We're on an indefinite cruise of the east coast of North America, following the seasons.Freedomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00908226736099522445noreply@blogger.comBlogger323125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9143489399266874846.post-19618789249566787162017-06-17T17:07:00.001-04:002017-06-17T17:07:58.238-04:00It's Hot, Hot, Hot!
Too hot in South Carolina, time to head to the coast and north. We zig zagged our way up to Charleston to stage for a 30+ hour offshore trip to Cape lookout.

We anchored in Charleston Harbor for the night and left at first light

It's a big harbor so we did get a great sunrise before we reached the ocean.
The good news was once we got out past the harbor and headed north it was cool and calm. That's the bad news too. Not enough wind, in the right direction to sail.
We sat out some storms in Cocoa and then headed to the Cape Canaveral anchorage before the lock and bridge.
We stopped in Vero Beach to get the bottom of the boat cleaned. There is a diver there that is good and very reasonable. We figured the newer bottom paint was doing its job keeping the barnacles off...and it was. The propeller was in desperate need of a cleaning. While here we took advantage of the free (air conditioned) bus system and headed to the beach
When we first purchased Freedom we had intended to upgrade our manual windlass to an electric one but it was a big and expensive project. We also found that the manual windlass worked really well and was not has difficult to deal with as we thought.

For our non boating friend, a windlass raises and lowers the heavy anchor and anchor chain. Our anchor is 65# and we have 200' of chain (about 200#).

Here is the manual one.
Visiting with friends, exploring one of our favorite cities and attending the boat show.

Everyone flocks to the boat show.

We took our time heading south down the Chesapeake Bay, through Maryland and Virginia. Ed had to attend the Fort Lauderdale boat show for work so we parked in New Bern, NC for a few weeks. We had a spate of very cold evenings while there but things warmed up for us as we headed south again. We needed to get south for two reasons. We had a surprise party to go to in Texas and wanted to stay warm.

We headed out the Beaufort, NC inlet with pefect weather! We made it all the way to Fernandina Beach, Fl where we took on additional fuel and headed back out to round Cape Canaveral. We actually talked (on the VHF radio) with our Detroit dock neighbors Jeff and Mary off the coast of Canaveral. They were sailing with thier much faster boat, passed us and headed to Fort Lauderdale as we headed to Stuart. It's a small world!

Our timing was great. Nice and toasty warm in Stuart and plenty of time to rent a car and sneak into Texas to surprise our nephew for his birthday!

Family...see the resemblance?

A fun time was had by all.

It was really great to spend time with family!

It got really cold while in Texas so it was time to head back south. One last side trip, we stopped for lunch in New Orleans. I had never been to this unique city. Gumbo, etoufe and po boys, oh my.
We are anchored just off the Sheepscot River, nestled safely between islands. We've moved a few times as the wind direction changes and are currently in Loves Cove, how romantic. Lots of great gunkholing (taking the dinghy to see the sights).

We anchored off Indiantown Island. The northern section is part of the Boothbay Region Land Trust. There is a great dinghy dock and a mile long hiking trail that loops around the north part of the island.
Finally we headed down the Black River. There are a collection of small islands that are quintessential old time Maine.

Lots of lobster pots to dodge, in fact so many that it was not as enjoyable a sail as we expected. It should have been a nice downwind sail with our code zero sail and our whisker pole. It was for a short while but we ended up turning the engine on and motor sailing with the mainsail only. We needed the extra power to slalom our way through the traps. Seas really picked up as we got close to Moose Peak lighthouse but we rocked and rolled our way into the cut and headed for our planned anchorage behind Mistake and next to Knight islands. Talk about lobster pots, wow! There were already 4 boats anchored in the area with a ton of lobster pots. Yes, this plan was a mistake but never fear we found a great, well protected spot right off Mud Hole in Wass Island. The next day we dinghied over to Mistake Island.
The Seven Seas Cruising Asociation(SSCA) held their Downeast Gam here in Rockland (no one knows what gam means. Maybe greet and meet?) We attended as members although all are welcome. They had potlucks and special guest speakers. About 40 boats in the harbor for the event and 100 people at the event. Fun was had by all.
Beautiful Maine

It seems like our trip north to Maine took much longer this year. We had longer wait times for a good weather windows to travel north and we had weather forcasts that were uncertain at best.
Oyster Bay in Long Island sound was beautiful and they had a Clam Bar that had great clams at a reasonable price (for New York).
Our good friends chauffeured us arond Newport, RI and gifted us with some lovely (and very tastey) wine! We always love our Newport stops.

We waited in Onset, Ma much longer than we wanted. There is nothing wrong with the area it was just that we kept planning to leave "tomorrow". Thunderstorms and fog delayed us. We took a short day to head to Hull Bay, an outer bay off Boston,to anchor and wait for our weather window to head to Maine.

At last we had a near perfect forcast to head north to Maine. Winds should have been light NW early, quickly changing to SW and then S. Okay, that didn't happen but we had calm seas and sailed in NW winds 8-20 knots) till sunset when the winds died and the big old full moon rose.

It's that time again. We left Cape Henlopen, Delaware and headed to a marina to top off fuel in Cape May, New Jersey. We anchored for a couple hours to wait for an outgoing tide....life is so much easier if you're not fighting current At 2:00 we headed north off the Jersey coast. We had perfect timing. We got to Atlantic Highlands to top up the fuel and were able to head to NYC to take advantage of the current!
Here we are headed towards Manhattan
Weather forecasting has been the issue, this has been the most diffucult six months, weather wise, we have yet to experience. Lots of systems headed this way and that. Weather guessers just couldn't agree about what exactly would happen so we played it safe and stayed in nice protected waters and anchorages. We spent some time in the Sassafras River and some time in Annapolis. We took advantage of a good weather window to travel to the Delaware Bay.

We got to experience this beautiful sunrise as we approached the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
We spent one rolly night anchored mid bay and headed to Cape Henlopen, a harbor of refuge near the town of Lewes. The Cape May/Lewes Ferries run through here and have facilities that include a restaurant and bus service to outlet malls and "historic Lewes, Delaware". They also have festivals and concerts from time to time. We got our anchor down and battened down the hatches for an approaching thunderstorm. Sustained 40 knot winds with 50 knot gusts made it very interesting. Our wind instrument froze at some point and the Cape May Coast Gaurd station 15 miles away reported 80 knot gusts! Yikes!
Here are pictures the festival we went to. A dress made of seaglass?
We are headed north to get out of the Florida heat. We took a quick trip to Fort Pierce to stage for our long trip on the outside. We were fortunate to meet with our friend, Tim. He is on a sailboat heading south so was able to have a quick dinner with us ashore in Fort Pierce. We made it an early night because we were heading offshore in the morning. We'll go as long as we can till weather or fuel runs out.

It is nice to have our new Code 0 sail pictured below for the light winds. We sailed into the evening hours on the first night.

This was our longest trip in the ocean so far. Because we were able to sail enough we could do a 3 day, 2 night trip! It really was beautiful and we enjoyed every minute. One night, while Ed was just coming on watch, he heard a clatter at the back of the boat. It was a flying fish that had landed on deck. Ed picked him up and threw him back into the sea. Hopefully it was soon enough that he survived his ordeal. On my final watch, just after sunrise, I looked at the side deck to find another flying fish...not so lucky this time.

As it turns out we ran out of both good weather and fuel around Beaufort, SC. A beautiful southern town to visit with the added benefit. Our transplanted neighbors from our Beverly Hills, MI neighborhood live in the area now. We had a great visit with Nancy, Paul and Andrea. The weather really turned here. Big winds and storms kept us here for almost a full week.
chris barthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03443682714519905495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9143489399266874846.post-73971222580855776522016-04-07T23:24:00.001-04:002016-04-07T23:24:50.313-04:00Trouble comes in threes
We were out on the boat shooting some video. On the way back to the mooring field, we started feeling a vibration. I throttled back and put it in reverse to see if we picked up something on the prop. That didn't help. We limped back to the mooring and the vibration got real bad but did get the boat tied up. Looking all around I noticed the prop shaft was loose. Hmmm. Transmission problems. Brought out a mechanic and he confirmed, we needed to replace the 30 year old transmission. We were in good hands and had him do a few other maintenance items.

We took a slip in the marina to do the transmission work. While there prepping for the transmission replacement, I noticed the bed felt hot. No, not from Chris. Under the bed is our 900 amp battery bank. One of the batteries was smoking and gurgling. Not good! I pulled all sources of power to the batteries and texted my marine electrician friend Rod. The other batteries that were wired in were continuing to feed the runaway battery. I took it out of the loop. My laser heat gun read 160 degrees! Rod advised that if one went, after 8 years, others would soon follow. Soooo, time to pull the 6 100 lb batteries out and buy a new set.

The good news was how easy it was to do! The battery box is directly below a large hatch. The hatch is directly below the end of the boom. The end of the boom swung perfectly over to the end of the finger pier. Easy up, easy over easy gone!
Away they go

Oh yea, threes. I picked up a job in Miami for Harken, a sailboat equipment manufacturer. They saw drone work I did and wanted something similar. So I went off to practice with my drone before the shoot. Flew four flights and all went well. On the fifth flight, the drone just decided to decend on its own. It sleeps with the fishes. That was Sunday. Had to borrow a car and run to Ft Lauderdale to buy another one Monday for the shoot Thursday. Sigh.

Oh, it's warming up now so I fired up the fairly new air conditioner. No joy, it blew hot air. So much for threes. At least the bees are gone.
We are safely moored in Stuart, Florida. It has been an odd winter both weather wise and otherwise. Skipping the Bahamas this winter was always the plan. It turns out that we made a wise decision. Big weather in the Bahamas this year including a derecho that caused lots of damage made it a good year to skip. What is a derecho? The dictionary describes this weather phenomena:

derecho (/dəˈreɪtʃoʊ/, from Spanish: derecho [deˈɾetʃo], "straight") is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm that is associated with a land-based, fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms. Derechos can cause hurricane force winds, tornadoes, heavy rains, and flash floods.

This was an especially bad wind year in the Bahamas because a good portion of the big winds came from the west. Most of the popular anchorages are exposed to the west and a lot of boats ended up on the rocks, dragging anchor in the strong west winds.

We had some strong winds here, as well. Below is a picture our friends took of Freedom rocking and rolling during a wind storm.

I had my sewing machine out on the table and we heeled so much my heavy machine slid across the table!

Weather wasn't the only drama we experienced. Enjoying a nice calm, sunny day on the mooring and honey bees started showing up in the cockpit. I looked outside and suddenly there were thousands of them swarming around our boat. We got all the hatches closed but now felt trapped inside our boat, unsure what to do. The bees all landed on the blades of our wind generator which was off at the time. Ed decided to turn it on to see if that would shoo them away. Instead they just moved to the body of the wind gen.

We googled 'swarming bees' and came up with a local bee keeper and gave him a call. He told us that they were likely just passing through on their way to finding a new hive location. He felt sure that they would move on in 24 - 48 hours and if not he would come collect them. Sure enough. ....they were gone within 3 hours! Wow....that was quite a buzz.
chris barthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03443682714519905495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9143489399266874846.post-50977445299974070832015-12-23T21:21:00.001-05:002015-12-23T21:21:58.957-05:00

chris barthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03443682714519905495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9143489399266874846.post-56741037341824601202015-11-25T20:34:00.001-05:002015-11-25T20:34:36.276-05:00

chris barthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03443682714519905495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9143489399266874846.post-71570238697834268622015-11-11T11:13:00.001-05:002015-11-11T11:13:29.512-05:00It's a Hard Knock Life
We are taking our time heading south this year.
